1. M3U playlist
Contains your channel entries, stream URLs and often metadata such as channel name, logo, group and tvg-id.
Have an M3U playlist with working channels but no TV guide? Adding EPG means connecting those live channels to programme-guide data — usually an XMLTV feed — and making sure each playlist channel maps to the correct guide channel.
The playlist and the programme guide do different jobs. Your M3U supplies the channels and stream locations. The EPG supplies programme titles, start and end times and other guide information. The two have to be connected by channel identity.
Contains your channel entries, stream URLs and often metadata such as channel name, logo, group and tvg-id.
Contains guide channels plus programme schedules. It does not replace the playlist or provide the video stream.
Connects each live M3U channel with the correct EPG channel so your IPTV app knows which schedule belongs beside which stream.
Sky Sports Main EventSky Sports Main EventThis is the practical workflow whether you are preparing the playlist manually or using Yerman to automate the matching.
Start with your local M3U/M3U8/TXT file or remote playlist URL. If you use Xtream / Active Code, the playlist can be retrieved from those authorised credentials.
EPG is primarily relevant to scheduled linear television. Movies and individual series episodes in a large IPTV playlist should not be treated like live guide channels.
Inspect tvg-id values where available. A compatible identifier can directly associate a playlist channel with its XMLTV guide identity.
When the ID is missing or incompatible, compare the real channel identity. Remove harmless provider formatting without throwing away meaningful numbers, languages or variants.
You need a guide feed containing programme data for the matched channels. If you do not already have one, Yerman's EPG Builder can create a guide from your matched playlist.
Paste the XMLTV URL into the player's EPG, XMLTV or TV Guide setting, save it, then refresh or reload the guide.
Import your playlist into the Yerman Beta M3U Editor. It analyses live channels and exposes EPG readiness and observed programme matches, helping you see what can be matched before you build the final guide.
tvg-id is one of the most useful pieces of guide metadata in an extended M3U entry. It can act as the link between a playlist channel and an XMLTV channel — but only when the identifier corresponds with the guide you are using.
tvg-idThe guide identifier. When compatible with the XMLTV source, this can provide a strong direct channel association.
tvg-nameA playlist metadata name. It can help identify the channel but should not be assumed to be identical to the XMLTV channel name.
The text after the comma is the visible playlist channel name. Providers often add prefixes, quality labels and formatting here.
tvg-id does not create programme data. The identifier has to correspond with a channel in the EPG source you actually use.Potentially, yes. Missing IDs make direct matching harder, but the playlist channel name can provide another route to the correct guide identity.

Country prefixes and quality labels may be removable in some cases; channel numbers and named or language variants may be essential.
Having an XMLTV URL is only part of the setup. Your IPTV player still needs to associate the playlist channels with the channels contained in that guide.
If the XMLTV source does not contain the channel or useful programme data for it, there is nothing appropriate to display.
The playlist can contain TVG IDs that belong to a different provider or naming system from the selected XMLTV source.
Provider prefixes, quality labels, punctuation and branding differences can prevent name-based matching even when both datasets refer to the same channel.
If you already added a guide and your channels still show blank rows, use the dedicated M3U No EPG troubleshooting guide rather than repeatedly replacing a working playlist.
Adding programme information is only useful when it is the correct programme information. A loose match can make the guide look complete while displaying the wrong schedule.
Sports 1, Sports 2 and Sports 3 are not interchangeable just because the surrounding text is identical.
English, French, Xtra, Max, Premium and similar terms may distinguish separate feeds with different programme schedules.

Yerman's EPG Builder accepts M3U, M3U8 and TXT files, remote playlist URLs and Xtream Codes credentials.
Automatic matching handles recognised channels while the matching workflow lets you review channels that need attention.
The resulting guide feed can then be added to the EPG or TV Guide setting in your IPTV application.
You do not necessarily need to manually construct an M3U URL first. If you have authorised Xtream / Active Code details, Yerman can use the server URL, username and password to retrieve the playlist and continue into the same channel-matching workflow.
The host address for the playlist service you are authorised to access.
The account credentials used to fetch your playlist. They do not themselves guarantee programme-guide coverage.
Once the live channels are imported, they still need suitable guide identities and programme data just like channels loaded from an M3U file.
If your Xtream channels already play but the guide is missing, see Xtream Codes No EPG for the dedicated troubleshooting workflow.
Use the beta editor to inspect the playlist and its EPG readiness. If you need a new guide feed, continue into Yerman's EPG Builder to generate the XMLTV URL for your matched channels.
Common questions about connecting M3U playlists with XMLTV programme-guide data.
You need programme-guide data containing the channels in your playlist, normally supplied as an XMLTV feed. Match the live M3U channels to the corresponding guide channels, obtain the XMLTV EPG URL, add that URL to the EPG or TV Guide setting in your IPTV player, then refresh the guide.
Usually not. The M3U can contain guide-related metadata such as tvg-id, but the actual programme schedules are normally supplied separately by an EPG source such as an XMLTV feed.
It is a web address for programme-guide data formatted as XMLTV. Compatible IPTV applications can read the feed and display its programmes against matched playlist channels.
tvg-id can identify which guide channel belongs to a playlist entry. It is useful when the ID corresponds with the XMLTV source being used.
Potentially. Channel names and other identity information can sometimes be used to locate compatible guide channels when a direct identifier is missing.
The guide may not contain that channel, the playlist ID may not correspond with the XMLTV ID, the channel name may not match, or the guide entry may contain no useful current programme data.
Some playlist formats and applications support guide-related metadata, but many IPTV players provide a separate EPG or TV Guide field. The important requirement is that the player can access the XMLTV source and associate its guide channels with the playlist channels.
Yes. Yerman's EPG Builder can import a supported playlist, take you through channel matching and generate an XMLTV EPG URL for the matched channels.
Yes. The same basic requirement applies: the imported live channels need compatible programme-guide identities. Yerman can import authorised Xtream / Active Code details directly.
Not necessarily. Automatic channel matching can identify many channels from available IDs and names. Manual intervention is most useful for channels that are ambiguous or cannot be safely identified automatically.
No. Yerman provides playlist and EPG management tools. Use only playlists and services you are authorised to access.
Start by importing the M3U and checking the live-channel matches. From there you can clean the playlist or create the XMLTV guide you need for your player.
